We often simply forget the last time we cleaned certain areas and parts of our homes. In the same way, most people tend to forget or even procrastinate completing a specific cleaning task.

The schedule is like a plan. It’s where you write down what has to be done, and when you’ll do it. You can even use a time-blocking method of organizing to predetermine how much time you’ll need for each task.

Maybe you already came across house cleaning schedules on the internet. Many bloggers came up with different checklists and organization tips that can be quite helpful. However, most people will advise you to only use those as guidelines and make your own schedule as opposed to using pre-made ones you found online.
The reason behind is that we don’t have the same lifestyles and the number of hours we can use for cleaning. Also, some people live in big houses while others live in one-bedroom apartments. Pre-made cleaning plans might include tasks you don’t have to do, such as washing the rugs if you only have bare floors.
For this reason, you should take the time and make your own plan. You can always use a pre-made one for ideas.
Below, you’ll find some of the tasks most people do on a regular basis. Again, you maybe won’t have to do some of these, or you’ll have to do a few more. It depends on your lifestyle and cleaning needs, in general.
- Wipe counters – use a paper towel or a cloth to wipe down kitchen counters after each meal. You should also wipe bathroom counters dry every day.
- Declutter – take some time every day to pick up clutter around the house. People who have stairs often leave stuff there, so make sure to put it all in its place before you go to bed.
- Make beds – one of the most important things you should do right when you wake up is to make your bed. By doing this, you make your bedroom look instantly more put-together.
- Do the dishes – how often you have clean dishes in the washer and a full sink of dirty dishes? To avoid this, wash the dishes in the evening and put them away in the morning as you wait for your coffee.
- Separate your trash – if you’re recycling, you should have separate bins. Recycling is much easier when you separate your waste every day.
Some things you won’t have to do as often, but only once or maybe twice a week. These are typically more heavy-duty and time-consuming, which is why you won’t have to do them as often.
- Clean your cooker top – if you cook every day, it’s likely you’ll notice some spills and spots on the cooker top. You’ll maybe have to do this more than just once a week, depending on how often you prepare food.
- Wipe down the cupboards – use a damp cloth with or without a kitchen cleaner to wipe any spills and spots from drawer fronts and cupboard doors.
- Take out the trash – you might also have to do this more than just once a week. Either way, have a reminder to take out your trash, so none of it is built up in your garage or backyard.
- Throw old food – make sure to throw out whatever is left in your fridge at least once a week. This is especially important if you have a large family and you buy lots of groceries weekly.
- Clean the floors – you should vacuum the floors thoroughly once a week or even more often if you have pets that shred. Dedicate a particular day to clean your floors, rugs, and carpets.
- Clean the bathroom – if your bathroom is brand new, it probably looks spotless clean all the time. However, all bathrooms are ideal for bacteria built-up due to steam and moisture. Wipe down the shower, taps, the toilet, tiles, mirrors, and everything else with an adequate cleaner.
Finally, there are tasks you can get away with doing just once a month. These don’t have to be done any more frequently than that, so consider adding them to your schedule as and if needed.
- Declutter your home – closets, and drawers tend to hold a lot of clutter that you should maybe get rid of. Throw or give away items that you no longer use or need in the future. However, to prevent having to do this too often, make sure to shop smart.

The tasks we discussed are the most common ones that people have to complete. However, some are equally as important, but we don’t really need to do them as often. These tasks are something we do only when required, but that doesn’t mean you should skip or forget them.
- Clean appliances – coffee machines, dishwashers, washing machines, and other household appliances can look quite messy if we forget to clean them now and then. Think about it – wiping your vacuum cleaner doesn’t sound as necessary, but before you know it, you’ll notice it looking dusty and dirty.
- Clean inside your oven and microwave – these appliances are crucial to be maintained clean both inside and out. Take a moment to clean these now and then depending on how often you use them.
- Clean the fridge and freezer – though you should check for spoiled food once a week, you should also remember to clean both the freezer and refrigerator. This is crucial, but it’s also something you can do whenever you feel the need.
- Change sheets and bedding – this could be a weekly or a monthly task for you as it depends on your needs and preferences. You should do it at least once a month, but even more often than that is fine if that’s how you like it.
- Sanitize sponges and cloths – this is a far more eco-friendly solution than simply throwing them away and buying new ones. Use a mix of ¾ cup of bleach in a gallon of water and soak the sponge for five minutes before rinsing it.
- Deep clean carpets – you won’t have to do this as often if you vacuum regularly and don’t walk inside with shoes on. Still, make sure to do it at least once or twice a year, or more often if you have pets.
How To Make a Plan You’ll Stick To
Seeing all these tasks at once might be a bit overwhelming, but keep in mind that everyone’s needs are different. We listed all the cleaning you should do and when, but it’s up to you to decide which tasks are the most critical for your household.
Probably the most important thing you should remember is that consistency is key to success when it comes to house cleaning. People have different working hours and hours of free time, but everyone can establish a routine whatever the routine may look like.
It’s essential that you stick to the plan you made. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself continually spending hours and days cleaning a house that always feels/looks messy.
Take a day to vacuum the floors, and another day to clean the bathrooms. Imagine you skipped to clean the floors and now you have to do that on top of cleaning the bathrooms, all in one day. It’s unlikely you’ll complete both, and if you do, you’ll probably be too tired.
While you shouldn’t obsess over your plan and do it at all cost, you should try your hardest to stick to it whenever you can.
Make a Spreadsheet
Making spreadsheets of cleaning tasks is an excellent way of organizing what should be done and when. While you don’t have to put the little daily tasks in your spreadsheet, the weekly ones should be there.
Things you do daily are more a part of your habit and something you do without overthinking. However, take a day of the week for each weekly cleaning task whichever it may be. You can even complete two or three on the same day depending on how much time you have.
- Mondays – vacuuming and sweeping the floors
- Tuesdays – cleaning the bathrooms
- Wednesdays – dusting shelves and counters
- Thursdays – change towels, sheets,
- Fridays – do work in the garden if you have one
- Saturdays – catch up on all the stuff
- Sundays – take some time off
This is just a very basic example of what a weekly routine could look like. Some days you might include a monthly task that’s due, while others you might not have anything to do depending on the size of your home.
If you live alone, you’ll probably have to do all of this by yourself most of the time. However, if you have a spouse, consider maybe asking for help. Sharing housework is often fun, so talk to your partner for him/her to take over a part of the loaded schedule.
Also, engage your children to pick up their toys and make their beds in the morning. This way, you’ll have a bit more time to do something else, and you’re helping your kids build and develop good habits.
If your kids were persistent in getting a pet, make sure to teach them how to take care after the animal. Teach them how to feed it and clean after it whenever that’s needed.
Having a clean house is important, and many of us feel better when everything is tidy and in place. However, our day-to-day lives are packed with different obligations and things we simply cannot postpone.
